Track Editor / Piano Roll

Editing

The Piano Roll is the main editing page. It combines note entry, track focus, playhead performance, Generator, MODS, and XPLAY.

Screen Areas

AreaWhat it shows
Top transport barPage/tab title, BPM, playhead focus, track/status badge, and status text.
Piano roll gridNotes, steps, the current cursor, playhead movement, and note lengths.
Right context tabsTRACK, GENERATOR, MODS, ARRANGE, XPLAY, PROJECTS, SYSTEM.
Playhead stripThree indicators for Orange, Yellow, and Blue.

Piano Roll Editing

Edit notes directly on the grid with touch.

  1. Select the track you want to edit.
  2. Touch the playhead color in the top transport area if the edit is playhead-specific.
  3. Touch the grid to place or remove notes, draw sideways to adjust gate length, and draw over notes to erase.
  4. Use the sidebar to edit velocity, gate, CC, program change, step count, probability, condition, or repeats.

Step Conditions (COND)

Every step carries a condition alongside its probability. A condition is evaluated first, per playhead and per loop pass: if it resolves false the step does not fire, its PROB is not rolled, and any step-placed MODS on that step do not fire (GLOBAL MODS are unaffected). If it resolves true, the normal PROB roll follows.

On the TRACK tab, COND has its own edit block directly under LENGTH, marked with the blue arrow indicator. Move to it with EncB and click EncB to open SET COND; while open, turning EncB steps through the conditions for the cursor step and EncD moves the step cursor. Click EncB again to exit. The step lane at the bottom shows the per-step condition values and can also be set by touch. The default --- (ALWAYS) shows no marking; any other condition shows a small corner badge on the grid step.

ValueFires
---Always (default).
1:2 … 8:8On the Xth of every Y loops of that playhead. 1:2 fires loops 1, 3, 5…; 2:2 fires loops 2, 4, 6… Sets: 1:2–2:2, 1:3–3:3, 1:4–4:4, 1:8–8:8.
1STOnly the first loop after the playhead (re)starts.
!1STEvery loop except the first.
FILLOnly while FILL is active.
!FILExcept while FILL is active.
PREOnly if the previous conditional step on this playhead fired this pass.
!PREOnly if that previous conditional step did not fire.
NEIOnly if the same step index on the neighbour playhead fired on its most recent pass. Order: Yellow reads Orange, Blue reads Yellow, Orange reads Blue.
!NEIInverse of NEI.
Polymetric & persistent Each playhead counts its own loops, so conditions stay musical under polymetric step lengths. The loop counter resets when the playhead is restarted or stopped, and persists across CASCADE segment handoffs. In REVERSE and PINGPONG, "previous" for PRE means previous in playback order. Conditions are saved with the clip and project. FILL is a global performance state with no dedicated control binding yet — it can be wired to any momentary control. Conditions apply to KEYS and DRUM clips; CV clips are not yet supported.

Track Types: Keys, Drum, and CV

When creating or replacing a track, the chooser can make a KEYS, DRUM, or CV clip.

Clip typeMain behavior
KEYSNormal pitched piano-roll editing.
DRUMDrum-lane editing with named rows, per-drum mutes, focus behavior, and movable row order.
CVControl-voltage editing with playhead lanes, CV drawing/recording, CV generator modes, lane mute/focus, and CV modulation targets.

Drum Clips

Drum clips use named drum rows instead of keyboard note labels. Touch the grid to add or remove hits for the selected drum part. The left drum labels are active controls:

ActionResult
Tap a drum labelMute / unmute that drum part for the current layer. Muted labels are red and prefixed with M.
Long-press a drum labelSolo that drum part (shown green). Other parts are muted until solo is turned off.
Long-press the focused drum againRestore the previous drum mute state.

Drum mutes are per track.

Moving Drum Rows

  1. Move the cursor to the drum row you want to move.
  2. Press EncC or EncD while the Drum roll is focused. The selection turns yellow and the transport shows the drum with MOVE.
  3. Turn EncC or move the joystick ↑/↓ to move the row through the list.
  4. Press EncC or EncD again to place it. The transport shows DRUM PLACED.
Note Moving a drum row changes the visible lane order only — it does not change the MIDI note assigned to that drum part. Use the DRUM MAP menu on the TRACK page to edit the drum MIDI-note assignment.

CV Clips

CV clips use the Piano Roll area as a control-voltage editor. The visible rows correspond to playhead lanes rather than keyboard notes. Touch the CV grid to draw CV values for the current lane.

ActionResult
Tap a CV playhead labelMute / unmute that CV lane for the current layer (shown greyed out).
Long-press a CV playhead labelFocus that CV lane and mute the others.
Long-press the focused CV lane againRestore the previous CV mute state.

Per-Playhead Step Lengths

Orange, Yellow, and Blue can each have their own step length — so one playhead can loop a short pattern while another runs a longer one.

Control pathWhat it changes
Select a playhead, then edit STEPS in the sidebarThe selected playhead's step length.
Select the TRACK tab, then edit LENGTHThe selected playhead's step length from the track-focused view.

The range is 1 to 32 steps. The bottom Control Bar follows the selected playhead, so switching playheads can change the visible active step range when lengths differ. Per-playhead lengths are stored with the clip/project state; each running playhead uses its own length for playback, timing, recording, and step-based MOD behavior.

Transport badge The top badge follows the focused track or layer. Tapping it toggles mute for that target; when muted, the badge flashes MUTED.

The selected playhead still owns its own direction, clock, input, output, record, humanize, and pass-thru settings. Playhead-menu settings are saved over power cycles automatically.

Recording

Recording is playhead-specific. Hold White plus the desired colored button to start. Set REC MODE, REC Q, INPUT, CHANNEL, and OUTPUT first if you need specific behavior.

SettingMeaning
OVERDUBAdd incoming notes into the current loop.
LOOP ERASEErase through the loop while recording. Lets endless tracks use the MOD system with live instruments.
LOOPRecord into the loop — notes record for one pass, then loop.
REC QQuantize recorded notes to 1/1 … 1/32 or NO Q.
HUMANSmall playback timing variation. OFF disables it.
AUTOAutomatic input selection.
DIN1–3Record from the selected physical DIN input.
USB1–3Record from the selected USB MIDI input.
CVRecord from the CV/gate input path.

INPUT and CHANNEL are evaluated per playhead, so one incoming MIDI stream can feed several playheads. For example, set Orange, Yellow, and Blue to DIN1 and channels 1, 2, 3 to record three external sequencer channels separately.

If CHANNEL is OMNI or unset, the playhead accepts all channels matching its INPUT. If CHANNEL is 1–16, only that channel records. CV input does not use channel filtering.

MIDI Pass-Thru

Pass-thru is a per-playhead raw MIDI note monitor. When ON, incoming note on/off messages matching the playhead's INPUT and CHANNEL are sent immediately to its OUTPUT — even when the playhead is not recording.

SettingBehavior
INPUT AUTOFor DIN input: Orange follows DIN1, Yellow DIN2, Blue DIN3.
INPUT DIN1–3Listen to the selected DIN input. Multiple playheads can share one input if channel filters differ.
INPUT USB1–3Listen to the selected USB MIDI input.
CHANNEL OMNIPass any incoming channel from the input.
CHANNEL 1–16Pass only that channel.
OUTPUT P1–P3Send the raw stream to the matching DIN MIDI output.
OUTPUT CV1 / CV2Convert the matching note stream to the selected CV/gate output.
Pass-thru is raw Pass-thru does not apply MODS. MODS are applied to recorded notes as they are written into the Piano Roll during recording, or during normal playhead playback.

Recording Through MODS

While recording, incoming notes that land on a step with an active MOD trigger that MOD immediately. If a MOD is set GLOBAL, recorded input can trigger it without a plotted step marker, subject to the MOD's play/rest loop settings.

This makes LOOP ERASE and normal recording behave like a playable thru workflow: incoming notes are written to the Piano Roll, their note-off sets the recorded length/gate, and matching MODS fire from the recorded step path.

TRACK Tab in the Track Editor

The TRACK tab focuses the selected playhead and shows six rows:

RowPurpose
PLAYHEADSelect or review the focused playhead.
GATE / VELOCITY / PROBDynamics row. Press EncB, then turn to edit each field.
LENGTHSelected playhead step length.
CONDPer-step trig condition (under LENGTH). Click EncB to open SET COND, turn EncB to choose the condition, click again to exit.
CC / CC VALUE / CC SMOOTH / PROG CHGCC row. The visible field changes as you step through details.
LFO MODTrack-level LFO modulation.
CROSS MODCross-track modulation.

Use EncB or joystick ↑/↓ to move between rows; EncA selects tracks; EncC/EncD stay available for Piano Roll cursor movement. LENGTH is per playhead — select a color first, then edit LENGTH. On CV clips the TRACK tab is compact: PLAYHEAD, LENGTH, LFO MOD, and CROSS MOD.

05

Track LFO

Modulation

Track LFO is a per-playhead modulation source in the TRACK tab. It is separate from the MODS LFO modifier.

Access

  1. Open the Clip Editor.
  2. Select the TRACK tab.
  3. Move to LFO MOD.
  4. Click EncB to open and move through the LFO fields; turn to edit values.

Track LFO Fields

DEPTHAmount of modulation. 0 disables movement.
SPEED4X · 2X · 1X · 1/2 · 1/4 · 1/8 · 1/16
TARGETVEL · PROB · CC VALUE · GATE

When TARGET is GATE, piano-roll note lengths update visually to show the modulation effect. On CV clips the fourth field is INVERT (OFF/ON) — CV wavefolding is handled by the global CV MODS path rather than the Track LFO target.

06

Cross Mod

Inter-track

Cross Mod lets one track's movement influence another track's parameter for the selected playhead. It is edited from the TRACK tab and runs as part of playback.

Access

  1. Open the Clip Editor and select the TRACK tab.
  2. Move to CROSS MOD.
  3. Click EncB to move through SOURCE, TARGET, TRACK, MODE, and AMOUNT.

Cross Mod Fields

FieldValues / purpose
SOURCECC · VEL · PROB · GATE · CV. Read from the current track.
TARGETCC · VEL · PROB · GATE · CV. Affected on the target track.
TRACKTarget track number.

AMOUNTModulation strength. 0 displays OFF.

MIRROR adds source movement into the target; INVERT subtracts or flips it. The display format is SOURCE>T2 TARGET, where T2 is the target track. When the source layer is a CV track, CV is the source and the SOURCE field may be skipped.

Keys clips use the same V1V8 variation slots as Drum clips. Giving any slot a nonzero VARI LOOP turns the variation system on for that track — the GENERATE toggle need not be enabled. At each loop boundary the active slot counts down its VARI LOOP, then hands off to the next playable slot and regenerates the melody at that slot's variant. RANDOM picks favour normal variants, with bridge and mix variants appearing occasionally. Muting a track pauses its own variation advance until unmuted.

CV generator parameters are stored per playhead and per CV mode, so changing mode recalls that mode's own amplitude, offset, smoothing, curve, cycle, phase, variant, and envelope. Generated waveforms stay visually stable on the rows during playback; the bottom bars show running movement.

  1. Use joystick left/right sidebar navigation.
  2. Select the MODS tab.
  3. Select a color slot with EncB click.
  4. Choose the MOD type with EncB rotation.
  5. Edit visible fields by selecting up/down with the joystick.
  6. Set PH, PLACE, GLOBAL, PLAY LOOPS, and REST LOOPS where shown.
Navigation lock Left/right navigation is locked while a MODS sub-menu is open. Click EncA or EncB to exit the sub-menu.

RESET and VEL SHAPE are compiled only into optimized builds — the Debug image has no flash room for them, so they are absent there.

MODS Sub-Menu Rows

The detail sub-menu shows up to four rows at a time. Scroll with joystick ↑/↓ or the active encoder. Rows that don't apply are hidden or show --.

RowMeaning
SLOTSelects the visible MOD slot.

VEL SHAPECCDEPTH, BASE, CURVE, INVMaps note-on velocity to a CC sent just before each note (fake poly-pressure). BASE rest value, DEPTH range, CURVE LIN/LOG/EXPO, INV flips polarity. KEYS & MIDI outputs only.
RESET & VEL SHAPE in depth RESET locks briefly onto the material just before its marker — useful for turnarounds and build-style repetition. With no note before the marker, the replay falls back to loop start; repeats past the loop end are cut by the wrap, and the marker re-arms each pass. VEL SHAPE emits its CC one queue slot ahead of the note-on on the same output/channel, so it always lands first. Default polarity is hard hit → high CC; map the CC on the synth to attack, cutoff, etc. Spread notes across the three playheads for pseudo-poly. (CV outputs, DRUM clips, and a note-off CC are future work.)

MOD LFO & Chord

Modifiers

Some MODS carry their own LFO. The LFO modifier is part of the MODS system and is separate from Track LFO.

MOD LFO Fields

FieldValues / purpose
SHAPESINE TRI SAW+ SAW- SQR RAND EXP+ EXP- PDEC STAIR S&H
RATELFO speed or clock rate.
DEPTHAmount of modulation.
MODECYCLE or SHOT.
TARGETNONE TRANSPOSE OCTAVE SHIFT RATCHET CHORD ARP MUTE CV1 CV2

CYCLE repeats continuously; SHOT is a one-shot movement when triggered. Use Track LFO for quick per-playhead modulation of VEL, PROB, CC VALUE, or GATE. Use MOD LFO when you want the LFO to behave like a modifier slot — with placement, target, play/rest loop, and event behavior.

CV clips On CV clips, CV-specific MODS are global/on-off where applicable. They hide per-step PLACE, PLAY LOOPS, REST LOOPS, and GLOBAL fields because the slot itself controls the CV effect.

Chord Mode

The CHORD modifier turns a note into a chord during playback or record-through-MODS behavior. It can also be a MOD LFO target, so chord type can move as part of an LFO setup.

FieldPurpose
AMOUNTChord type: MAJ MIN DIM AUG SUS2 SUS4 7 MIN7 MAJ7 9 ADD9 QUART.
STRUMON offsets chord voices across the step instead of firing all at once.
NOTESNumber of voices, 3 to 7.
SPREADStrum spread, shown as a fraction of the step such as 2/16.
PROGProgression probability. OFF keeps the chord type fixed; higher values let the engine choose related progression functions over time.

Chord output is scale-aware on Keys tracks, can feed the arpeggiator when ARPEGGIO is also active, and uses the selected playhead assignment, placement, GLOBAL, PLAY LOOPS, and REST LOOPS like other MODS.

Crossfade

XPLAY

Crossfade blends tracks and modifiers across four quadrants. Press White to enter, then long-press White for the setup HUD. HUD settings are saved over power cycles automatically.

Screen Layout

Crossfade Types

TypeBehavior
ALLAll assigned quadrants fully present — a quick all-on reference.
CENTER 0Center is zero. Tracks and MODS are muted at center; moving toward a quadrant fades it in. Corners act like solo points.
CENTER MIXCenter is the full mix. Moving away crossfades between solo quadrants; corners strongly solo.
MIDI MIXCenter is a routing source, quadrants are destinations. Route DIN/USB input, DIN output buses, or CV input to DIN or CC destinations.

Operation

Assign tracks or MODS to quadrants, then move the joystick to blend. The closer the dot is to a quadrant, the stronger it becomes; a corner strongly favors that quadrant. Touch a quadrant to select it; the lower area toggles MOD behavior for that slot. When TYPE is MIDI MIX, the setup HUD becomes routing rows — SOURCE is the center source (always active while Crossfade is open) and each quadrant has its own DEST, DEST CH, and DEST CC.

Crossfade Setup HUD

Long-press White (BTN1) while Crossfade is open. The HUD keeps a 2×2 matrix on the left and editable rows on the right.

Live Play

XPLAY

Live Play launches tracks and patterns. It uses the same 12-track performance mask as Song, so opening Live Play can follow the current Song scene when Song playback is active.

Screen Layout

A 12-track grid arranged 3 columns × 4 rows. Available tracks show their names; unavailable tracks show --. The top-right mode switch shows:

Transition

XPLAY

Transition moves from one live source to another over a timed progress ramp — between project-pool slots in the current bank, or between tracks in the current project.

Choosing mode Long-press White while Transition is open for the TRANSITION TYPE HUD. Choose PROJECTS for project-slot handoff or TRACKS for track-to-track. Short-press White closes the HUD first, then Transition.

Project Transition

Shows the current project bank, slot chips, source/target letters, detected key/BPM, total progress, and one progress bar per playhead.

ControlUse
EncA before runningSet transition length, 1–64 bars.
EncB before runningChoose the target slot. Empty targets show TARGET EMPTY.
EncB pressStart the timed transition. Press again to cancel; from manual mode, continue in timed mode.
EncC / EncDStart or move manual progress. EncC larger steps, EncD finer.
EncC pressReset and revert the current handoff.
EncD pressLoad the target when stopped, or commit after handoffs complete.

The source must be the active project and the target a used slot. With internal clock, ADEPT can interpolate BPM from source to target analysis. Where key analysis exists, the view shows the source/target key relationship during the handoff.

Track Transition

Shows a 12-track grid. The live source is marked LIVE, the target TO, and unavailable tracks --.

ControlUse

Live Mix

XPLAY

Live Mix is a performance mixer across 12 sliders. Each slider can target a track, scale note velocity for the selected playhead, or send a CC value. Sliders can record automation takes and be locked against accidental movement.

Screen Layout

CV CalibrateOpens the CV calibration wizard (optimized firmware). The row uses a blue > action marker and sits last in the list.

CV Calibration

The CV Calibrate item opens a guided wizard for tracking the two CV outputs and calibrating the CV input. Calibration is stored in flash and survives power cycles and firmware updates. Without calibration, ADEPT uses nominal scaling, exactly as before the feature existed.

Optimized firmware only The wizard exists in optimized firmware only. In a non-optimized Debug build the menu still advertises CV Calibrate, but the detail text directs you to use Test_Og or another optimized firmware image.

Wizard Menu

EntryWhat it does
CV1 TRACKTracks CV1 OUT across A0–A7.
CV2 TRACKTracks CV2 OUT across A0–A7.
CV IN LOOPBACKAutomatic input calibration using a patch cable.
CV IN MANUALInput calibration from an external 1V/OCT source.
RESET ALLClears all calibration and returns to nominal scaling.

Wizard Controls

ControlUse
EncA turnMove the wizard menu selection, or coarse-trim a CV output point.
EncB turnFine-trim a CV output point. EncC and EncD also act as fine trim while the wizard is open.
EncA pushSelect the highlighted entry when the menu shows ENCA GO.
EncB pushCapture a CV output point, start loopback, capture manual input, or return from DONE / ERROR screens.
White (BTN1)Back out one step, or exit from the menu.
Joystick ↑/↓Move the menu selection.

To open the wizard, go to SYSTEM, select CV Calibrate, and use the row's blue > action. Once open, use the controls shown at the bottom of the wizard card.

Output Tracking (CV1 TRACK / CV2 TRACK)

  1. Patch the chosen CV output to the synth or oscillator you want ADEPT to track, and monitor it with a tuner.
  2. Choose CV1 TRACK or CV2 TRACK. The wizard starts at A0 and shows ANCHOR 1/8, then advances through A1–A7.
  3. For each A anchor, use EncA for coarse DAC trim and EncB for fine trim until the target synth is in tune with the shown A note.
  4. Press EncB to capture the current anchor. After A7 is captured, ADEPT saves the curve and returns the output to normal operation.
  5. The System summary shows TRACKED when all eight anchors are valid and the curve increases cleanly. If the DONE screen reports INVALID, repeat the pass.
Voltmeter alternative If you prefer a voltmeter to a tuner, the eight anchors are spaced one volt apart: A0 is 0.750 V, A1 is 1.750 V, and so on through A7 at 7.750 V.

Input Calibration

ModeProcedure
CV IN LOOPBACKPatch CV1 OUT to CV IN and press EncB to start. ADEPT outputs the low and high reference voltages, waits for settling, averages 32 readings per point, and stores the input calibration. The loopback path uses CV1's voltage reference if present, otherwise falls back to nominal CV1 output.
CV IN MANUALFeed a steady calibrated 1V/OCT source into CV IN. Capture the low point at 0.750 V, then feed and capture the high point at 6.750 V. The screen shows the live ADC raw value while you set each source voltage.
Unstable & flash format If a capture reports INPUT UNSTABLE, the signal moved too much during measurement — check the patch cable and source, then retry. Formatting flash storage also clears CV calibration; recalibrate after a format. The summary shows TRACKED / NOMINAL for CV1 and CV2, and CAL'D / NOMINAL for CV IN.
Visual socket map The System page shows hardware labels for the main I/O areas — DIN input/output pairs, CV/gate outputs, trigger, and CV input. The four grey encoder circles are labeled A, B, C, D, matching this manual: A top-left, B top-right, C bottom-left, D bottom-right.
Destructive FLASH format is destructive. Confirm only when you intend to erase flash-backed data. Joystick ↑/↓ or touch selects a setting; EncB navigates the list; White changes the setting or opens format confirmation.

Web Editor & Firmware Updater

SysEx

The ADEPT web editor can edit project metadata, track names, system settings, and playhead settings over ADEPT SysEx. The playhead editor mirrors the current device fields:

Field groupAvailable controls
GlobalSELECTED · CASCADE · SEQUENTIAL
Per playheadPLAY MODE · DIRECTION · CLOCK DIV · CLOCK SRC · OUTPUT · CHANNEL · REC MODE · REC Q · INPUT · PASS THRU · HUMAN · MASTER · LOOP Q · S/S FILTER

The web editor accepts OMNI for CHANNEL, USB1–3 for INPUT, PASS THRU ON/OFF, and the same global CASCADE and SEQUENTIAL behavior as the hardware menu.

Firmware updater The updater validates the firmware image before transfer, reboots ADEPT into bootloader mode when possible, erases the full app flash area, sends the firmware in SysEx chunks, retries finalization if the bootloader is still present, and waits for ADEPT to reboot into app mode.

MODS

Each MOD is written in the same order: its main field (the first MOD-specific row after TYPE, which is renamed per MOD) and any detail fields that appear only for that MOD. Where a field says "value set", the values are listed once in the Value Sets table below.

Shared MOD Rows

These rows are shared by most non-CV MODS.

CV MODS

CV MODS appear on CV clips and hide normal step-placement rows where the slot itself controls the CV effect.

MODMain fieldNotes
CV OFFSETOFFSET −64…+64Adds/subtracts from the raw CV value before output.
CV SCALESCALE 1–164%Scales the CV value around its current range.
CV INVERTINVERT ON/OFFFlips the CV shape.
CV QUANTIZESTEPS OFF, 2–48Quantizes CV output into a fixed number of steps.
CV WAVEFOLDWAVEFOLD ON/OFFFolds the CV waveform back into range.
